Disaster Monitoring in Flooded Areas

Extreme rain caused high water and heavy flooding in the district of Ahrweiler in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Many people lost their livelihood. A catastrophe of unimagined dimensions. Now it is important to get an overview of the damages as soon as possible. "Disaster monitoring" is the keyword.

Already in 2019, GeoFly GmbH was commissioned to record damages caused by Hurricane Dorian in the Caribbean.

Also in the current situation in Rhineland-Palatinate as well as in Erftstadt and Altena in North Rhine-Westphalia, the aerial image-based inventory with an aircraft is one of the most effective solutions.

The DA62 of the Austrian manufacturer Diamond Aircraft was used. This special mission aircraft is designed to operate at low and medium altitudes. In addition, the high-performance UltraCam Osprey 4.1. camera was used for this special mission. The high performance camera system has the advantage of efficiently providing razor sharp images.

The data from the aerial survey are georeferenced and give a fast and homogeneous overview of the affected areas.

Rapid evaluation of the images also makes it possible to move forward with claims settlement. Subsequent evaluations can also be used for future risk analyses on flood hazards and thus reduce the impact of such disasters for the future.
